Conservative Party Fragmentation & How Extremism Pushes Masses to the Middle

I believe strong arguments from both sides result in better  policy and governance for the American people. Extremism and the lack of an ability for sound debate and argumentation is leading to party fragmentation and disillusionment in the GOP. The tea-party movement and talking heads are causing serious problems for the party by bringing the extremism and not their A game, counter arguments on the issues. In all the half-assed, ill-thought efforts to attack the Obama administration, the blow hards are blowing the party apart. The GOP and conservative movement need  new leaders and spokesmen  who are willing to embrace and address the specific challenges of the issues, not dismiss them in sweeping generalizations as elitist, socialist, or the usual rhetoric.

The problem, is that the spokesmen for the conservative party have become too extreme.  These media monsters have over-saturated the market and in a competitive effort to increase ratings, they have floated away from the party with their extremist rhetoric reached the breaking point. The talking heads refuse to engage in real debate on the issues, (discussions amongst those who agree does not qualify) and instead seem hell bent on focusing on generating new nomenclature and buzz language for those who will swallow and recite it without question. They are huffing, puffing and blowing many, intelligent conservatives away from the party.  Personally, I have a hard time determining who to turn to now, when I wish to hear from sound conservative minds.

We do not live in a world of one way communication anymore. This is the information age and the era of engagement, discussion and social media. Society has inevitably realized that they can comment, blog and participate in the conversation and challenge an argument. News media outlets have lost much of their power and seek to get it back. The evolution of controlling/distorting a message has come to faking engagement via censoring dissent or discussing with an agreeable panel, which only succeeds in  making the problem more prominent. The talking heads have had a dismissive attitude towards confrontation or counter-points on the issues and the masses, many of whom have rediscovered and reconnected with their voice, are disgruntled with what is presented.

The problem with the conservative response to Obama’s policies is that it amounts to a media blitz of tantrums. The issues are not being addressed with sensible, point and counter point argumentation. The opposing view point and message is so riddled with emotional rhetoric and weightless arguments that have no substance, that many of us, in the middle, and even the reasonable right are forced to shift to the logic of the left. Every time I hear a reference to Kenya, communism, conspiracy, socialist agenda, Hitler and the Nazis, I know a bad argument is being presented.

Save the sweeping generalizations for the conclusion, after and only after you connect the dots with evidence and specific criticisms else you risk losing credibility.

The sub-text of racist, fear mongering, xenophobic viewpoints are off topic to say the least. The Kenya conspiracy theory, is obviously racially motivated and back-firing. The nazi thing is weak sauce as well. I fail to see the connection between truly, the greatest and most absolutely evil force the world has ever seen and say, nationalizing healthcare. This is called a false analogy. You take a small aspect and try to imply the entire thing. For example, Hitler gave very loud, emotional, fervent, almost angry speeches much like certain radio talk show hosts I can think of. This too is a false analogy and in my example, I am trying to associate the speaking styles of  radio shock jocks with Hitler in hopes of transferring an image of evil. This trick is made most obvious when Hitler and the Nazis are used in the comparison to associate with a negative. Further more the right needs to legitimize the the implication that Obama is evil or is the Antichrist with a little more evidence than what is being presented.

This arguing style forces people to decide between a sound argument and an angry voice. It is not considered a contribution to national debate when an argument, logically presented with acknowledgement to the pin-point, dividing line of disagreement,  is confronted by a media blitz of vague, emotional appeals for hate, fear and aggression. This doesn’t demonstrate strength, intelligence or many of the values of the party. It paints a picture of the Republican party and conservative movement as a big, dumb, angry bully trying to cheat to win. It’s like watching Pop-eye play rope a dope with Pluto. Just by playing the part it leaves the voters to view  the opposition as Pop-Eye,  and who do you think they’ll want to root for? The Obama administration doesn’t need to eat their spinach. Seriously, watch Pop-Eye and think Limbaugh or  Glen Beck.

This shouldn’t be the face of the conservative party but if the blow-hards continue to speak without discretion, the party will continue to fragment. I recently watched the sixth and seventh season of The West Wing and admired the integrity of the candidates from both parties to keep a clean campaign and national spotlight on the issues and specific points where they differ. That is how politics is supposed to be. I think we’ve all had enough of the bull.

P.S.

I’m further confused as to who represents the GOP viewpoint as party members disassociate themselves from the traditional faces of conservationism. Please send me some good links to articles and content that might convince someone with a reading level and education beyond the 5th grade.

The Best Video Breakdown of the Case for the Public Option…and the Lack of Sound Arguments Against it.

I want to see the healthcare debate move forward. I know the legislation has passed but it is still an important issue. So please watch this video and if you disagree, help me understand by commenting with your counter arguments. Don’t bother posting anything related to “death” panels, or other cockamamie, un-thought, fabricated arguments generated by a certain foxy media companies. I challenge you to do better and really make the case against it.

My bias: I believe healthcare is an essential service for everyone. I agree that we “socialize” many other essential services like fire departments, water management, utilities, coast guard, etc. The problem with our current status quo is that the primary objective of private insurer’s is profit not healthcare. They profit most when people are denied coverage and left suffering. So, I am pro public option- but would love to hear valid points from the other side.

The debate has been watered down with hate speech and other garbage. The arguments against healthcare that have been popularized don’t hold water upon the first counter-argument. Please educate me on the side against the reform and the public option in the comments section!

What Makes a Red Man Red:Latest Harris Poll Reveals Shocking Numbers On Republican Thoughts

Posted by thechivalrous in Polls

The latest Harris Poll released Wednesday reveals the lengths of the Republican party to condemn and attack the opposition. As it turns out, most of what the GOP Talking heads have taught party members are not political talking points but more on the absurd, personal and racist commentary. The poll raises the question, who speaks for the GOP? Articles from USA Today are pointing a finger at El Rushbo.

Here’s a break down of the poll taken from 2,230 people.

25% of Republicans believe President Barack Obama might be the Antichrist. 14% of Americans over all.

67% of Republicans believe President Obama is a socialist. 40% of Americans over all.

57% of Republicans believe President Obama is a Muslim. 32% of Americans over all.

Could you be any more blatantly racist? I wonder what the correlation is between these numbers and the numbers of admitted racists.

45 percent of Republicans, and 25 percent overall, believe that Obama was “not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president.”

Like there was a conspiracy from his birth to have him run for President.

38 percent of Republicans, and 20 percent overall, say that Obama is “doing many of the things that Hitler did.”

And yet the Republicans are scapegoating a ethnicity/religion to seek power much like the Nazis who cried Jews in Hitler’s time.

Disagreeing with his politics and policy is fine, but this type of hate speech and misinformation are shameful at the very least. It’s time to choose between bigotry and many respectful party members and Obama dissenters who don’t need to call him Muslim to confront his policies.

Welcome!

Welcome to today. The economy is shaky at best, it is more difficult than advertised to find a job, health care reform has passed and what was once considered objective “news” media is almost non existent, at least not on television or radio. 3G coverage and broadband Internet access aren’t available for many states in the middle. So the only app for that market comes on ancient airwaves. Many people who live without the ocean views of the gizmosphere get their “news” from the AM dial which is dominated by shock jock hacks. Or perhaps they get CNN or FOX News and mistake the programming as actual news rather than entertainment.

The Problem: Bad Habits and Bullshit

We as a nation have developed some bad habits. Many people do not know the issues beyond the bumper sticker slogans they’ve heard on a talk show. They cannot discuss by any measure of depth the implications and aspects of the issues. Many more people don’t care to go to the source, read multiple sources, compare notes, corroborate evidence or address opposition. In short, this country has forgetting how to think, converse, discuss and debate. The lack of interest, capacity, and effort have  allowed  us to blindly swallow BS in business and government.

How many people profited from lying about the housing crisis? Many. War? Many more. When the bubbles burst, hopefully you didn’t buy in, although when you don’t, you’ll find yourself  as liked and well received as the Dixie Chicks.

The biggest pile in the political realm is Politically correct speech. It is one of the greatest threats to society.  The notion that we need to be sensitive to the point of denying reality is absurd. The late and great George Carlin mentions this as evidence to the further “pussification” of America. It’s worse than that. If we are to say what makes others feel good and not what is true, we will condemn human knowledge and science altogether and there are many politicians trying to argue just that.

People are too busy to study the issues (even those where they hold strong opinion) because there is too much going on with Facebook, reality TV, and the Internet.  Our worship to the constant, mind numbing entertainment we find has made us too busy to work and too retarded to think (yes I used retarded in the derogatory). Our worship of bullshit has made us into a 2nd rate country in terms of productivity, output and global competition. We are very productive if you count the piles and piles of bullshit but if you measure our economic worth on the products and services that actually add value, empower and enrich lives, then we’re left with a much  much smaller pile.

The Solution: End the Stupidity- Throw Away the Bad Ideas and Bad Arguments

There are many bad ideas backed by poor arguments  that have floated around for years and they need to be squashed so that we can move forward progressively.

I’m 24 and I don’t own a television. I get my news from the web and the radio (BBC and NPR), but I am a pragmatic, fiscal conservative and social entrepreneur; as red, white, and blue as you can get. On this blog, I will concentrate on the bad ideas, poor arguments and misinformation and hopefully push the better ideas. I’ll focus on pointing out the flaws behind the bad ideas and promoting better solutions and the better ideas. We can refine them all together.
